ষোড়শ শতকের অন্তিমে লেখা এই নাটক অসামান্য গঠন আর মননের কারণে আজও সমান প্রাসঙ্গিক। শেক্সপীয়ারের যাবতীয় চরিত্রের মধ্যে এ নাটকের শাইলক অনবদ্য। যদিও পাঠক বা দর্শক শাইলককে বরাবর খলচরিত্র হিসেবেই দেখেছে, এবং এ নাটককে কমেডি ছাড়া কিছু ভাবেনি, তবু অন্তর্নিহিত পাঠ বা subtext বদলায় না। একদিকে পোর্শিয়ার ক্ষুরধার বুদ্ধি, আর অন্যদিকে ভেনিসবাসী এক ব্যবসায়ীর (নামচরিত্র?) চরম বিপর্যয়ের ট্র্যাজেডি এই নাটককে স্মরণীয় করে রেখেছে। সিদ্ধার্থ বিশ্বাসের অসাধারণ ভাষান্তরে চিরকালের নাটক নতুন করে উপস্থাপিত এ কালের পাঠকদের জন্য।

ষোড়শ শতকের অন্তিমে লেখা এই নাটক অসামান্য গঠন আর মননের কারণে আজও সমান প্রাসঙ্গিক। শেক্সপীয়ারের যাবতীয় চরিত্রের মধ্যে এ নাটকের শাইলক অনবদ্য। যদিও পাঠক বা দর্শক শাইলককে বরাবর খলচরিত্র হিসেবেই দেখেছে, এবং এ নাটককে কমেডি ছাড়া কিছু ভাবেনি, তবু অন্তর্নিহিত পাঠ বা subtext বদলায় না। একদিকে পোর্শিয়ার ক্ষুরধার বুদ্ধি, আর অন্যদিকে ভেনিসবাসী এক ব্যবসায়ীর (নামচরিত্র?) চরম বিপর্যয়ের ট্র্যাজেডি এই নাটককে স্মরণীয় করে রেখেছে। সিদ্ধার্থ বিশ্বাসের অসাধারণ ভাষান্তরে চিরকালের নাটক নতুন করে উপস্থাপিত এ কালের পাঠকদের জন্য।

‘কান্দাহার’ এবং ‘দ্য সাইক্লিস্ট’-এর মতো ছবির স্রষ্টা, ইরানের খ্যাতনামা ও বিতর্কিত চলচ্চিত্র-পরিচালক মহসেন মখমলবাফ এখানে, এই লেখার পরিসরে একটু ভিন্ন ভাবে উপস্থিত। আফগানিস্তান সম্পর্কে যে-লেখাটি এ বইয়ের মূল উপজীব্য, যদিও তা লেখা হয়েছিল বামিয়ান-এর বিখ্যাত বুদ্ধমূর্তি তালিবানদের হাতে ধ্বংস হওয়ার কিছু পরে, কিন্তু পাঠক দেখবেন আজও তার প্রাসঙ্গিকতা কিছু মাত্র কমেনি। তার কারণ আফগানিস্তানের পরিস্থিতি আজও কিছু মাত্র বদালায়নি। সাম্প্রতিক কালে এই লেখার মতো হিউম্যান ডকুমেন্ট বোধ হয় খুব বেশি রচিত হয়নি। তার সঙ্গে রয়েছে প্রায় অজানা এক দেশের বিস্তারিত পরিচয়, আর তা লেখা হয়েছে ব্যাক্তিগত অনুভব-বর্জিত কোন সাংবাদিক বা পেশাদার লেখকের বয়ানে নয়, গভীর ব্যাক্তিগত উপলব্ধি থেকে। বারবার পড়ার মতো এ লেখা।
