পৃথিবীর শিল্প-ইতিহাসে সর্বকালের জনপ্রিয়তম দুটি ছবি, ‘মোনা লিসা’ ও ‘লাস্ট সাপার’-এর স্রষ্টা লিওনারদো দা ভিঞ্চি শুধু চিত্রকর হিসেবেই নয়, সেই সঙ্গে ভাস্কর, স্থপতি, সঙ্গীতজ্ঞ, বিচিত্র বিদ্যায় নির্মাণ কুশলী কারিগর, এমনকী জল প্রণালীর পরিকল্পক, গণিতজ্ঞ ও সামরিক প্রযুক্তিবিদ হিসেবেও একই রকম খ্যাত কীর্তি ছিলেন। এ সমস্ত বিষয়েই নানান পর্যবেক্ষণ, পরীক্ষানিরীক্ষার বর্ণনা, ফলাফল ও সিদ্ধান্ত তিনি বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিচ্ছিন্ন পৃষ্ঠায় বা বাঁধানো খাতায় লিখে রাখলেও জীবদ্দশায় তা সর্বসাধারণের গোচরে আনেননি। দীর্ঘ কাল পরে অনেক বাধা কাটিয়ে তা প্রথম প্রকাশ করেন মহাশয় জাঁ পোল রিষটার। উইলিয়াম রিষটার সম্পাদিত ঐ মহাগ্রন্থ থেকে শুধু শিল্পকলা বিষয়ক অংশের অনুবাদই এ বইয়ের উপজীব্য।

শ্রম আইন, শ্রমিকদের বিষয়ে যে-সব আইন আমাদের দেশে চালু আছে, ছিল, সে সব এখন বদলানো চলছে৷ বদলানোর প্রস্তাব করা হচ্ছে৷ বিভিন্ন রাজ্যে এবং কেন্দ্রে৷ বদলে দেওয়া এই সব আইন, প্রথমে একটা-একটা করে এই লেখায় বলা হয়েছে। তারপর দেখানো হয়েছে এই সব আইন বদলে ফেলার জন্য কী-কী যুক্তি সাজাচ্ছে সরকার৷ আর সে যুক্তি কেন গ্রহণীয় নয়। সেই সূত্রেই বোঝা যাবে কেন এই বদলের বিরোধিতা করা দরকার। তাই শেষে বলা হয়েছে এর বিরোধিতায় শ্রমিকদের কী করণীয়, তা-ই নিয়ে৷ সুখ্যাত বিশ্লেষক শুভেন্দু দাশগুপ্তের এই ছোট্ট বইটি এ সময়কে বুঝতে জরুরি।
